# Website builder or web designer in NZ? Your options compared By Web Smart HQ · Published 2026-10-04 **Short answer:** NZ businesses have four ways to get a website. DIY builders cost about $25 to $150 a month, ex GST. Subscription sites charge a monthly fee for a built site. Fixed-price studios and freelancers publish prices from $299 + GST. Auckland agencies typically quote about $1,800 (small agencies) to $4,000 (large agencies) + GST for a small site, from our survey of 25+ published NZ prices (Oct 2026). Over 3 years, the gap between options gets much wider. ## Key takeaways - DIY builders are cheapest upfront, but cost $25 to $150 a month ex GST, plus 20 to 40 hours of your time. - Over 3 years, a 5-page site averages ~$3,800 with a freelancer and ~$9,100 with a small agency (Auckland, ex GST, Oct 2026). - Subscription sites are easy to start. Check the minimum term and what you keep if you stop paying. - Whichever option you pick, register the domain in your own name. ## How did we compare the options? We compared the options on upfront cost, 3-year cost, your effort, ownership and lock-in, using published NZ prices gathered between Aug 2025 and Oct 2026 and builder pricing pages read on 3 Oct 2026. Averages come from our [NZ website prices survey](https://websmarthq.com/guides/nz-website-prices/). Prices are NZD and exclude GST unless marked. Overseas builders bill in US dollars, so we show their prices that way. We build fixed-price websites, so we're one of the options on this page. To keep it fair, we haven't ranked anyone, and nobody paid to be included. ### What we compared - Upfront cost: what you pay to get live. - 3-year cost: build plus hosting, domain and the usual extras. - Your effort: how many hours you put in. - Ownership: who holds the domain, the content and the logins. - Lock-in: what happens if you want to leave. ## What are the four ways to get a website in NZ? The four ways to get a website in NZ are a DIY builder, a subscription website, a fixed-price studio or freelancer, and an agency. They differ most on upfront cost, your effort and who holds the domain. ### Website options in NZ, side by side | Option | Upfront (ex GST) | Ongoing (ex GST) | Your effort | Watch for | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | DIY builder (Wix, Squarespace, Rocketspark, Shopify) | $0 build | $25 to $150 a month | High: 20 to 40 hours to build | Your site usually can't move to another platform | | Subscription website | Low or $0 | Monthly fee; published examples from $285 to $350+ a month | Low | Minimum terms and exit rules | | Fixed-price studio or freelancer | Published from $299; Auckland freelancer average ~$800 for 1 page | Hosting and domain ~$300 a year (average) | Low to medium | Who holds the domain and logins | | Agency | Auckland average ~$1,800 (small) to ~$4,000 (large) for 1 page | Hosting and domain ~$600 to $1,000 a year (average) | Low | Contract length and change fees | _Prices ex GST. A builder gives you templates and a drag-and-drop editor, and you can change things whenever you like. The cost is your time. Plan on 20 to 40 hours for a first site. SEO settings, your Google profile and photos are still your job. Most builders also keep your design on their platform, so moving later means rebuilding. Google's AI Overview for "website builder nz" (3 Oct 2026) named three NZ-made builders, including Rocketspark. It quoted one at "around $20/month". ### Published builder prices (read 3 Oct 2026) | Builder | Published price (ex GST) | Billing | | --- | --- | --- | | Rocketspark (NZ) | $49, $59 or $150 a month + GST | Monthly, cancel any time | | Wix | US$17 (Light) or US$29 (Core) a month | Annual plans, billed in USD | | Squarespace | From NZ$19 a month (Basic, ex GST, checked 9 Oct 2026) | Check the current price before you sign up | | Shopify | US$39 a month, or US$29 billed yearly | USD, plus card fees from 2.65% + 30c | _Rocketspark, Wix and Shopify prices are ex GST; the Squarespace guide doesn't state GST. A subscription website is built for you, then rented back to you for a monthly fee that usually includes hosting and small changes. It suits people who want one predictable bill and no upfront cost. The catch is what you own. Some plans have a minimum term. Some keep the design when you leave, and a few keep the domain too. Over 3 or 4 years, a monthly fee can cost more than a one-off build. For a .nz domain, you can check who the registrant is with the [Domain Name Commission](https://dnc.org.nz/). ### Ask these before you sign a subscription - Is there a minimum term, and what does it cost to leave early? - Is the domain registered in my name? - If I stop paying, do I keep the content, the images and the design? - What does the monthly fee include, and what costs extra? - Can the price go up during the term? ## Options 3 and 4: fixed-price studios, freelancers and agencies Over 3 years, a 5-page site averages ~$3,800 with an Auckland freelancer, ~$9,100 with a small agency and ~$17,000 with a large agency, ex GST. With these options, someone builds the site for you at an agreed price. Freelancers and small studios usually cost less, and agencies more. Both can do great work. The averages include the usual extras, such as Google profile setup, SEO setup and 3 years of hosting. ### 3-year cost of a 5-page site (Auckland averages) | Option | 3-year cost (ex GST) | Your time | | --- | --- | --- | | DIY builder | ~$1,800 | Plus 20 to 40 hours of your own time | | Freelancer | ~$3,800 | Supplying details, photos and feedback | | Small agency | ~$9,100 | Supplying details, photos and feedback | | Large agency | ~$17,000 | Meetings, approvals and feedback | _Source: our NZ website prices survey, built from published NZ prices (Aug 2025 to Oct 2026). There isn't one best builder. It depends on what you need. Rocketspark is NZ-made and bills in NZD. Shopify is built for online shops. Wix and Squarespace are popular overseas options. We compared them on upfront cost, 3-year cost, your effort, ownership and lock-in, using prices read on 3 Oct 2026. If you'd rather not build it yourself, a fixed-price designer may cost less over 3 years than you'd expect. ### Is there a New Zealand-made website builder? Yes. Google's AI Overview for "website builder nz" on 3 Oct 2026 named three, including Rocketspark. Rocketspark publishes plans at $49, $59 and $150 a month + GST, billed monthly. The same overview quoted another NZ builder at around $20 a month. NZD billing is one reason to pick an NZ builder. Check current prices on each site before you sign up. ### What's the cheapest way to get a website in NZ? Cheapest upfront is a DIY builder, at about $25 to $150 a month. Cheapest over 3 years is less clear. Our survey puts a 5-page DIY site at about $1,800 over 3 years, plus 20 to 40 hours of your time. A freelancer averages about $3,800 (Auckland, ex GST, Oct 2026). That $2,000 gap works out at $50 to $100 for each hour you'd spend. ### Are monthly subscription websites a good deal? They can be, if you want one predictable bill and no upfront cost. Published NZ examples start around $285 to $350 a month. The risks are minimum terms, price rises and what you keep when you leave. Before signing, check that the domain is in your name and that you can take your content with you. Over 3 or 4 years, a one-off build is often cheaper. ### Is Rocketspark good for NZ businesses? Rocketspark is a fair NZ-made option. It bills in NZD. On 3 Oct 2026 its plans ran $49 to $150 a month + GST. They're billed monthly, with no long contract. It suits owners who want to build and edit the site themselves. Like most builders, your design stays on its platform, so moving away later means a rebuild. ### Who should NOT choose Web Smart HQ? Choose someone else if you need an online shop with lots of products, as our packages don't include a store. The same goes for a custom app, a member portal or a complex booking system. If you want to edit your site daily yourself, a builder fits better. If you want a big agency with lots of people on your account, we're a small studio. ### How did you compare these options? We used published NZ prices gathered from Aug 2025 to Oct 2026. We added builder pricing pages and Google's results for "website builder nz", both checked on 3 Oct 2026. We compared upfront cost, 3-year cost, effort, ownership and lock-in. We didn't rank anyone, nobody paid to be included, and we've said plainly that we're one of the options. --- Source: https://websmarthq.com/guides/website-options-compared-nz/ Web Smart HQ · Titirangi, Auckland 0604, New Zealand · hello@websmarthq.com · Business Lite $499 + GST, Business Plus $899 + GST
