Local SEO and Google Maps

Local SEO in NZ: get found on Google Maps

You keep doing the jobs. We make sure Google knows where you do them.

Usually same day, always within 2 business days.

Short answer

Local SEO helps a business show in Google’s map pack: the three listings under the map. Google says it weighs relevance, distance and prominence. Map pack movement typically takes 1 to 2 months. We quote after a quick look, with no lock-in. Our own profile was in the top 3 for “seo titirangi” (searched from Titirangi, 2 Oct 2026).

How the Google Maps pack is decided

Google has said publicly that local results come down to three things. Here they are in plain English, with what we can and can’t change.

  • 01

    Relevance

    We work on this

Does your listing match what the person searched? Your categories, services and description do the talking here. This is the part we change most.

  • 02

    Distance

    Fixed

How far you are from the person searching, or from the place they typed. Nobody can change this. It’s why you might rank in your suburb and not across town.

  • 03

    Prominence

    We build this

How well known and trusted you are. Reviews, mentions on other sites, and your website all count. This builds over months, not days.

What the work includes

The mix depends on where you’re starting. These are the jobs that move a local business on Maps.

  • Your Google Business Profile: primary and secondary categories, services, service areas and description
  • Fresh photos and regular Google posts, so the profile looks cared for
  • Holiday hours set before every public holiday
  • Your name, address and contact details the same across NZ directories
  • A simple review habit, with a direct review link and QR code
  • Pages on your website for your main services and suburbs
  • A short note when each round of work is done

No shopfront? You can still show on Maps

Plenty of tradies, cleaners and mobile businesses work from home. Google allows this. You set up a service-area profile, hide your home address, and list the suburbs or towns you cover.

The catch: Google still uses your verified location behind the scenes. So you’ll usually show best near home, and less in suburbs further away. Suburb pages on your website and reviews that mention those suburbs help close the gap.

It plays out suburb by suburb, and town by town. See where we work.

A review habit that keeps going

Reviews are a big part of prominence. A steady trickle beats a burst followed by months of nothing.

  1. 01

    Ask at the right moment

Right after a job goes well. A short text works better than a long email.

  2. 02

    Make it one tap

Send a direct link to your review box. Our free Google review link tool makes one, with a QR code for invoices.

  3. 03

    Reply to every review

Thank the good ones. Answer the rough ones calmly. Future customers read both.

  4. 04

    Never fake it

No paid reviews, no swapping, no rewards for five stars. It breaks Google’s rules and it isn’t worth the risk.

Local SEO and AI answers

Ask ChatGPT or Google’s AI for a business nearby, and the answer leans on the same signals. Your Google profile, your reviews and consistent details across the web. Good local SEO covers a lot of it. More on AI search optimisation.

What local SEO costs

We quote after a quick look at your business. No lock-in. A one-suburb plumber needs less work than a five-suburb builder, so they get different quotes. For context, local SEO in NZ usually runs $500 to $1,500 a month at the market rate (ex GST, Oct 2026). You’ll get a fixed price and a list of the work, before anything starts.

How much does local SEO cost?

We quote after a quick look at your business. No lock-in. The price depends on how many suburbs you want to show in, how complete your profile is, and how strong the competition is. For market context, local SEO in NZ usually runs $500 to $1,500 a month (ex GST, Oct 2026). You get the price and the work list first.

What is local SEO, and how is it different from normal SEO?

Local SEO aims at the map pack: the three businesses shown under the map when someone searches for a service nearby. Normal SEO aims at the regular results underneath. Local SEO leans on your Google Business Profile, reviews, directory listings, suburb pages and consistent details. Most local businesses need a bit of both, but in our experience the map pack brings most of the calls.

What do you do each month for local SEO?

It depends on what your profile needs most. Typical jobs: keep your Google Business Profile complete, add photos and posts, and set holiday hours. We also fix mismatched directory listings, help your review habit along, and improve suburb pages. After each round you get a short “done” note listing what changed. Nothing to log in to.

Can you guarantee I'll get the top spot on Google Maps?

No. Nobody can, and Google says so. Distance from the person searching is a big part of the map pack, and nobody can move your business closer to everyone. What we can do is make the parts you control as strong as possible: relevance and prominence. We’ll show you the work each round so you can judge it.

I don't have a shopfront. Can I still rank on Google Maps?

Yes. Set up a service-area profile, hide your home address and list the areas you cover. Google still uses your verified location in the background. So you’ll usually show best near home and less in far-off suburbs. Suburb pages on your website and reviews that mention those areas help you reach further.

Which NZ directories matter for local SEO?

Fewer than you’d think. Start with the big general ones, such as Yellow and Finda, plus your NZBN record. For trades, the lead-gen sites can be worth a look. Industry bodies count too. The key is that your business name, address and contact details are written exactly the same everywhere. Mismatches confuse Google more than a missing listing does.

Will local SEO help me show up in ChatGPT and Google's AI answers?

Partly. AI tools that recommend local businesses lean on the same signals local SEO builds: your reviews, consistent listings and clear suburb pages. So the work overlaps a lot. There are extra steps for AI, like making sure your prices and services are easy to read. Our AI search optimisation page covers those.
