- Working from home? Hide your address and set service areas instead.
- Never add keywords to your business name. It can get the profile suspended.

What do you need before you start?
To set up a Google Business Profile, you need a Google account, your real business name, one main category, an address or service areas, and a phone number or website. With those ready, setup takes about half an hour.
Google Business Profile used to be called Google My Business. It’s the free listing that shows in Google Maps and beside search results. Google’s own help explains how to add or claim a profile.
Your setup list
- A Google account you’ll keep. Any email address works, not just Gmail.
- Your real business name, exactly as it appears on your signage, van or invoices.
- The one category that best finishes the sentence “this business IS a…”.
- Your street address, or the suburbs and towns you travel to.
- A phone number you answer, and your website if you have one.
- Your opening hours, a list of your services and 3 to 5 real photos.
How do you set up and verify your profile?
You set up a Google Business Profile at google.com/business in about 20 to 30 minutes, then verify it, which usually takes a few days. Google picks the verification method, and its verification help page lists the options.
- Setting up your profile
- 1
Sign in
Go to google.com/business and sign in with the account that should own the profile. Use one you control, not a staff member’s or a past designer’s.
- 2
Search for your business
Type your business name. If it already shows up, claim that listing. Making a second one creates a duplicate, which causes problems later.
- 3
Choose your main category
Pick the closest match. You can add a few true secondary categories later.
- 4
Add your location or service areas
If customers visit you, add your address. If you go to them, say you don’t have a location they visit, then add service areas.
- 5
Add contact details
Enter your phone number and website. Use details that match your website exactly.
- 6
VerifyA few days
Google picks the method. Many new profiles are asked to record a short video. Others get a call, text, email or postcard.
- 7
Fill in the rest
Add hours, services, a plain description and photos. Then get your review link and start asking customers.
Should you show your address or set a service area?
If customers don’t come to you, hide your address and set service areas instead. Google says service-area businesses should do this, and that covers most home-based tradies and sole traders. Your address stays private, but Google still uses it to verify you.
PO Boxes aren’t allowed. Virtual offices and coworking addresses are a common reason for suspensions. Keep your service areas to the places you can realistically serve. Rural addresses with an RD number work, but check the map pin lands on the right spot. The full rules are in Google’s guidelines for representing your business and its service area help.
| Your business | Address setting |
|---|---|
| Tradie working from home (plumber, sparky, builder) | Hide address, add service areas |
| Mobile business (dog groomer, mobile mechanic) | Hide address, add service areas |
| Sole trader whose clients never visit | Hide address, add service areas |
| Café, shop, salon or clinic | Show address |
| Accountant or lawyer with an office clients visit | Show address |

Categories, services, hours and photos
Your primary category is the most important map-pack setting, rated the top factor in Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey. Choose it carefully, then leave it alone. One expert reported a firm that fell from first to 31st after changing category.
List every service you offer. Predefined services jumped from 81st to 22nd in the same survey. Keep hours accurate, because “open now” also rated highly there. A café that closes at 2pm should say 2pm.
Add 4 to 6 real photos a month: your work, your premises, your van, your food. Write a plain description with no keyword stuffing. Posts are optional; published tests found they barely move rankings. They may get seen more, though (see below).
What's new on Google profiles (Oct 2026)
Four changes were reported this month, mostly Google tests. Some owners are being offered verification by uploading a photo of a government ID, which Google says isn’t shown publicly (test reported 20 Oct 2026). Google is testing Posts higher on the business panel, so regular posts may be seen by more people (test reported 19 Oct 2026). Some business panels in Search show a WhatsApp button; it isn’t confirmed as a full rollout (reported 7 Oct 2026). And Google says review appeals are delayed by high volume, with no timeframe. If you’ve appealed, don’t file a duplicate (reported 20 Oct 2026).
How is the Google Maps pack decided?
Google says the Maps pack is decided on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence includes your reviews and links to your business. Google’s tips to improve your local ranking also say you can’t request or pay for a better local ranking.
| Factor | Can you change it? |
|---|---|
| Primary category | Yes. Get it right once. |
| Distance from the searcher | No. Nobody can. |
| Keywords in the business name | Don’t. It breaks Google’s rules. |
| Address in the city searched | Only if it’s real. |
| Open when people search | Yes. Keep hours accurate. |
| Star rating and review count | Yes. Ask every customer. |

Reviews: steady beats big
In published local SEO tests, rankings tended to improve at around 10 reviews and could slip after a few weeks without new ones. Our guide on getting Google reviews shows how.
Common mistakes that hurt or suspend profiles
The mistakes that most often hurt or suspend a profile are keywords in the business name, the wrong primary category, duplicate profiles and fake or virtual addresses.
Avoid these
- Adding keywords to the name (“Bob’s Plumbing Auckland Emergency Plumber”).
- Choosing a primary category for what you want to rank for, not what you are.
- Making a new profile instead of claiming the old one, leaving duplicates.
- Using a PO Box, a virtual office or a coworking desk as your address.
- Showing a home address that customers can’t visit.
- Listing hours you don’t keep, or a phone number that differs from your website.
- Stuffing the description or letting AI write it full of keywords.
