How much does a website cost in NZ in 2026?

A small business website in NZ costs about $800 to $1,400 + GST from a freelancer. Auckland agencies typically quote about $1,800 (small agencies) to $4,000 (large agencies) + GST for a small site, from our survey of 25+ published NZ prices (Oct 2026). More pages cost more, and the same 5-page site can cost $1,400 or $7,000 + GST depending on who builds it.

The table uses Auckland averages from published NZ prices. Every figure is ex GST, so add 15% GST if your designer is registered. Published NZ cost guides quote $1,500 to $12,000 + GST for a professionally built small business site (2026). The top of that range is usually bigger sites with custom features.

What different businesses usually need

Your type of business changes the page count and the features, and that’s what moves the price. Most tradies need 4 to 6 pages, while many sole traders do well with one strong page.

  • Tradies

Home, services, a job-photo gallery and a quote form. Click-to-call matters more than anything fancy. That’s usually 4 to 6 pages, so the ~$1,400 freelancer band or a 5-page package.

  • Cafés and restaurants

Menu, hours, location and a booking link. Menus change often, so ask how updates are charged. A built-in booking system adds ~$500 to $2,500.

  • Sole traders

A strong 1-page site is often enough: what you do, where, your reviews and a contact form. That’s the ~$800 freelancer band, or $499 + GST with us.

  • Professional services

Clear service pages, people profiles and trust signals. These sites often run to more pages, so expect small-agency pricing for custom design.

What pushes the price up?

Features and set-up work push a website’s price up more than extra pages do. A booking system or an online store can cost more than the rest of the site put together.

What does a website cost to run each month and year?

Running a website in NZ costs about $300 a year for hosting and a domain with a freelancer, or ~$600 to ~$1,000 with an agency (ex GST), plus any care plan, email and edits. The build is a one-off, but these keep costing every year. Ask for them in writing before you sign.

Per month, hosting and a domain work out at roughly $25 to $83 (ex GST, Oct 2026). A DIY builder plan replaces that at $25 to $150 a month. A care plan or business email adds to either.

Red flags in a website quote

The main red flags in a website quote are a domain registered in the designer’s name, lock-in terms, a vague scope and promises of the top spot on Google. Google says no one can guarantee a top ranking.

Ask about any of these before you sign

  • The domain is registered in the designer’s name, not yours.
  • A minimum contract term, or a fee to leave.
  • Hosting priced well above the market, with no breakdown.
  • A vague scope: no page count, no feature list, no limit on changes.
  • Nothing in writing about who owns the site, the content and the logins.
  • A promise of “top of Google, guaranteed”. Google says nobody can guarantee that.
  • Nothing in writing about year-two costs.

How much does a website cost in NZ in 2026?

Most small business sites cost $800 to $1,400 + GST from a freelancer. Auckland agencies typically quote about $1,800 (small agencies) to $4,000 (large agencies) + GST for a small site, from our survey of 25+ published NZ prices (Oct 2026). DIY builders cost $25 to $150 a month instead, ex GST. Our fixed prices are $499 + GST for 1 page and $899 + GST for 5.

How much should I pay someone to build a website for me?

For a 1 to 5 page service site, $800 to $3,400 + GST buys solid work (Auckland, Oct 2026). At that level, expect a mobile-friendly design, a contact form and basic SEO setup. Paying $5,000 + GST or more should buy custom design, more pages or features like bookings. Whatever you pay, make sure you own the domain and get the logins.

How much is a fair price for a website?

A fair price is one that matches the market and spells out what you get. For a small site in Auckland, published prices average ~$800 for 1 page from a freelancer, ~$1,800 from a small agency and ~$4,000 from a large agency (ex GST, Oct 2026). A fair quote lists the page count, the features and the year-two costs, and puts the domain in your name. If two quotes differ a lot, compare what each one includes.

How much does a full website cost?

Counting the build, the usual set-up extras and 3 years of hosting, a 5-page site averages ~$1,800 DIY (plus 20 to 40 hours of your time), ~$3,800 with a freelancer, ~$9,100 with a small agency and ~$17,000 with a large agency (Auckland, ex GST, Oct 2026). Published NZ cost guides quote $1,500 to $12,000 + GST for the build alone. The top of that range is usually bigger sites with custom features, and an online store costs more again.

How much does it cost to run a website for a year?

Hosting and a domain cost about $300 a year from a freelancer. Agencies average ~$600 to ~$1,000 a year (Oct 2026). A DIY builder costs $25 to $150 a month instead. Add business email at $8 to $18 per person a month. If you want updates done for you, NZ care plans run $39 to $249 a month. All prices ex GST.

How much does a website cost in NZ per month?

Once it’s built, hosting and a domain work out at about $25 a month with a freelancer, ~$50 with a small agency or ~$83 with a large agency (yearly prices divided by 12, ex GST, Oct 2026). A DIY builder plan costs $25 to $150 a month instead. If you want updates done for you, care plans run $39 to $249 a month. Business email adds $8 to $18 per person a month.

How much do web designers charge per hour in NZ?

Published NZ rates run from about $35 to $80 an hour on freelance marketplaces. Established Auckland freelancers charge $85 to $250 an hour, with around $100 common (checked Oct 2026). Agencies usually charge $100 to $250 an hour for edits. Most designers quote a fixed price for a new site, then use an hourly rate for changes afterwards.

What red flags should I look for in a website quote?

Watch for a domain in the designer’s name, a minimum term or exit fee, and hosting with no breakdown. A vague scope is another warning: no page count, no feature list and no limit on changes. Ask what year two costs, and get it in writing. And be wary of promises of the top spot on Google, because Google says nobody can guarantee a ranking.

Are cheap websites worth it?

They can be, if the basics are right. Check four things. You own the domain. There’s no lock-in. Hosting fees are clear. SEO setup (titles, descriptions, a sitemap) is included. A cheap site that ticks those boxes beats an expensive one you can’t leave. A cheap site that fails them often costs more to fix later.

Can I create my own website in New Zealand for free?

You can start building for $0 on most DIY builders, but running a business site isn’t free. Builder plans cost about $25 to $150 a month, and a .co.nz or .nz domain is $25 to $60 a year (ex GST, Oct 2026). Building it yourself also takes 20 to 40 hours. A free Google Business Profile costs nothing and can carry a new business for a while. Our DIY vs web designer guide compares the options.

Is there GST on website design in NZ?

Yes, if the designer is GST-registered. GST is 15%, and most NZ designers quote “+ GST”. So a $1,000 + GST quote is $1,150 in total. If your business is GST-registered, you can usually claim it back. Designers earning under $60,000 a year don’t have to register, so some prices have no GST added.

How much does an e-commerce website cost in NZ?

A small online store (up to about 20 products) averages ~$2,000 from a freelancer. Small agencies average ~$4,500. Large agencies average ~$10,000 (ex GST, Oct 2026). Bigger catalogues cost more. Then add the platform: Shopify’s Basic plan was US$39 a month, or US$29 billed yearly, ex GST, when we checked. Our packages don’t include a store.
