What do you get at $300, $1,000 and $3,000 a month?
Around $300 a month buys a few hours of upkeep, $1,000 buys typical local SEO, and $3,000 buys competitive or multi-city work, all ex GST. This is what published NZ packages usually include at each price. Always ask for the list in writing.
~$300 a month
A few hours of work. Usually a report, small page fixes and some Google profile posts. Fine for upkeep in a quiet area. Too thin to win a busy one.
~$1,000 a month
Typical local SEO. Google profile work, review requests and local listings. A new or improved service or suburb page most months, and plain reporting.
~$3,000 a month
Competitive or multi-city work. More pages and content, technical fixes, PR and link work, and call and form tracking.
One-off setup or monthly SEO?
A one-off SEO setup is often enough for a local business in a quiet market, while monthly SEO makes sense in busy markets or across several cities. A good setup covers the foundations. After that, in our experience, steady reviews and an accurate Google profile do a lot of the work.
| A one-off setup is often enough when… | Monthly SEO makes sense when… |
|---|---|
| You serve one town or a few suburbs | You want to rank across several cities |
| Few competitors show in your map pack | The map pack is full of businesses with 50+ reviews |
| You’ll ask for reviews yourself | You want someone else to keep it moving |
| Your services rarely change | You add services or areas often |
Why does local SEO cost less than national SEO?
Local SEO costs less because the competition is smaller: a sparky in Kumeū competes with a handful of local firms, not every electrician in the country. Most of the work is your Google profile, reviews and a page for each main service and area.
National SEO is a different job. You’re up against bigger sites, so it takes more pages, more content and more links. That’s why it sits at $3,000 a month and up, ex GST.
For local work, map-pack results usually show in 1 to 2 months and organic results in 3 to 6+ months. Those are typical, not promised. See how long SEO takes and our local SEO page.
What cheap SEO leaves out
Cheap SEO usually leaves out the work that changes your site and Google profile, and often adds risks like bought links or ranking promises. Google says no one can guarantee a top ranking, and bought links break its spam policies.
Red flags in an SEO offer
- A promise of “top of Google, guaranteed”. Google says nobody can guarantee a ranking.
- Link packages (“500 backlinks a month”). Google’s 2025 to 2026 updates have hit sites built on bought links.
- A 6- or 12-month lock-in with a fee to leave.
- Reports full of rankings for searches nobody types.
- No access to your own Google Search Console or Analytics.
- Nothing visibly changes on your site or Google profile from month to month.
- Keywords added to your Google business name, which risks suspension.
How do you choose an SEO provider?
Choose an SEO provider by asking plain questions about the monthly work, contracts, account ownership and reporting, and by checking how they rank for their own local searches. We won’t tell you who’s “best”. Google’s own advice on hiring an SEO lists more questions. Good providers answer them plainly.
Questions to ask
- What exactly will you do each month, in writing?
- Who does the work, and who do I talk to?
- Can I leave any time? What do I keep?
- Are my Google profile, Search Console and Analytics in my name?
- Where do you rank for your own local searches?
- How will you report: calls and enquiries, or just rankings?
