Short answer
NZ agencies usually suggest $1,000 to $3,000 a month in Google Ads spend for a local business. Management adds $497 to $750 a month, or about 20% of spend, and setup fees run $799 to $950 (ex GST, 2026). What are the three parts of the cost?
Google Ads costs a small business three things: the clicks you pay Google for, a management fee if someone runs it for you, and sometimes a one-off setup fee.
Google itself has no minimum. You set an average daily budget and only pay when someone clicks. Google’s help page on average daily budgets explains how that budget is spent across a month.
Google adds 15% GST to Google Ads for accounts with a New Zealand business address, so the ex GST prices in this guide are before that is added (Google’s tax help).
| Part | Typical NZ cost (2026, ex GST) | Paid to |
|---|---|---|
| Ad spend (clicks) | Your choice; agencies often suggest $1,000 to $3,000 a month | |
| Management | $497 to $750 a month, or ~20% of spend | Whoever runs your ads |
| Setup | $799 to $950 one-off; some charge none | Whoever sets it up |

Google Ads keyword data for New Zealand, pulled 3 Oct 2026 (top-of-page bid estimates, NZD, ex GST). Searches are 12-month averages.
These are top-of-page estimates, so your average click can be lower. One NZ agency published real averages for regional trades: plumbing $2.20 to $5.10, electrical $2.20 to $6.50 and landscaping $3.80 to $6.00, ex GST. It found Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch cost 20 to 80% more (12 months to Jul 2026).
- Searches a month for “plumber auckland”
- 2,900
- What one Google Ads click costs (ex GST)
- $12.52
- $899 + GST buys this many clicks
- 71
Or a website that can show up for those searches every month, for as long as you keep it.

Is $10 a day enough?
$10 a day (about $300 a month, ex GST) can work in a regional town or a cheap-click trade, but it buys very few clicks for a busy Auckland trade. Whether it’s enough depends on your click price. Here’s the simple maths.
| Average click price (ex GST) | Clicks a month | Enquiries at 5% |
|---|---|---|
| $2.20 (regional plumbing, low end) | ~136 | ~7 |
| $5.10 (regional plumbing, high end) | ~59 | ~3 |
| $12.52 (plumber auckland, top of page) | ~24 | ~1 |
| $24.99 (roofer auckland, top of page) | ~12 | 0 to 1 |
Our arithmetic, ex GST. The 5% enquiry rate is an assumption; one NZ provider quotes 4 to 8% for service businesses. Your results will differ.
Smaller budgets also give Google less data to learn from.
Is it worth it? Do the break-even maths
Google Ads is worth it when the profit from the jobs it wins is more than your ad spend plus fees. Four steps tell you whether that’s likely for your business.
- Work out your numbers in four steps
- 1
ClicksBudget ÷ click price
$1,500 ÷ $12.52 = about 120 clicks a month.
- 2
EnquiriesClicks × enquiry rate
120 × 5% = about 6 calls or forms.
- 3
JobsEnquiries × close rate
If you win half, that’s 3 jobs a month.
- 4
Break-evenTotal cost ÷ jobs
With $497 to $750 management, total cost is about $2,000 to $2,250 ex GST. Each job needs about $670 to $750 profit to break even.
If one job is worth thousands, ads can pay well. If a job is worth $150, they rarely do. A good landing page lifts the enquiry rate, which changes every line above.
How much should a small business spend each month?
NZ guides suggest from about $300 a month (ex GST) for a regional trade up to $1,500 to $3,000 for a local service business, but the right budget is whatever buys enough clicks for your maths to work.
| Situation | Suggested ad spend (ex GST) |
|---|---|
| Regional trade, quiet market | From ~$300 a month |
| Small local trade | ~$900 a month, plus management |
| Local service business | $1,500 to $3,000 a month |
| Small business generally | $1,000 to $5,000 a month |

A sole trader in Whangārei may do fine on $300. An Auckland roofer paying ~$25 a click gets only about 80 clicks from $2,000 (ex GST). Allow time to learn, too: one NZ provider quotes 4 to 6 weeks before results settle.
Ways to make each dollar go further
The cheapest way to get more from Google Ads is usually a better landing page and tighter targeting, not a bigger budget. Google’s keyword list tips are a good place to start.
Before you raise the budget, check these
- Send each ad to a page about that one service, with a clear call button and a short form.
- Add negative keywords so you don’t pay for “jobs”, “DIY” or “free” searches.
- Target only the suburbs and towns you actually serve.
- Run ads during the hours you answer the phone.
- Track calls and form enquiries, not just clicks, so you know what works.
- Keep your Google Business Profile and reviews strong. People check both before they call.
New in Oct 2026: channel controls and lead scoring
On 14 Oct 2026 Google announced two optional budget controls, rolling out globally over the coming months (Google Ads blog). Channel prioritisation lets you mark channels as high or low priority, and Google funds high-priority channels first. Budget allocation lets you cap a low-priority channel at a share of your daily budget. Google says it aims to keep to that cap, but it isn’t a hard limit.
This helps small budgets stay on Search, where people are already looking for your service. From Feb 2027, Google ends the current spend setup for Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on, so spending may shift. Check that setting before then. On a small budget, we’d usually untick the Display Network, or mark it low priority with a cap.
Lead form ads can now flag qualified leads
It was reported on 16 Oct 2026 that lead form ads can now score answers (Search Engine Roundtable). When you add a custom question, you tick which answers count as a good lead, such as “this month” for “When do you need the work done?”. Google’s in-app note says this helps it find higher-quality leads.
