Short answer
For a small NZ business, local SEO usually shows in the Google Maps pack within 1 to 2 months. Organic rankings take 3 to 6+ months, and competitive searches can take 6 to 12 months. These are typical timelines, not promises. Your competition, reviews and starting point all change the clock.
- Map pack: usually 1 to 2 months with a well set-up Google profile.
- Organic results: 3 to 6+ months, and 6 to 12 for busy searches.
- Judge month one on work done, not rankings.
- Review at 6 months: are calls and enquiries up?

How long does SEO take in NZ?
For a small NZ business, SEO usually moves the Google Maps pack in 1 to 2 months and organic results in 3 to 6+ months, with competitive searches taking 6 to 12 months. The map pack is the 3 businesses with a map, near the top. Organic results are the normal blue links below. They move at different speeds.
| Where you show up | Typical time | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps pack | 1 to 2 months | Google profile category, services, reviews, distance |
| Organic, local low-competition searches | 3 to 6 months | Service pages, site health, local relevance |
| Organic, competitive searches | 6 to 12 months | Content depth, links, reputation |
| AI answers (ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews) | Varies | Reviews, listings, mentions and your own site |

Why does SEO take so long?
In our experience, SEO takes months because Google has to find, crawl and re-assess your changes, and your competitors already have years of reviews, links and pages. Crawling alone can take weeks. A brand new site starts with no history, so Google is slower to trust it.
Reviews and mentions build up over time, and Google keeps updating how it ranks. That’s why SEO works like compound interest, not a light switch.
Be wary of "page one in 30 days"
Google says nobody can guarantee the top spot. Fast promises usually rely on shortcuts like bought links, which break Google’s spam policies and which its 2025 to 2026 updates have punished. Slow and genuine lasts longer.
What speeds SEO up, and what slows it down?
The right Google category, steady reviews and one page per service speed SEO up, while a wrong category, long review gaps and bought links slow it down.
| Speeds it up | Slows it down |
|---|---|
| The right primary category on your Google profile | A wrong or recently changed category |
| A few new reviews every month | A few weeks with no new reviews |
| One page for each main service and area | One page trying to cover everything |
| A fast, mobile-friendly site | A slow site, or pages blocked from Google |
| A smaller town or a quieter trade | Central Auckland or a busy trade |
| A site with some history | A brand new domain |
| Genuine links and mentions | Bought links and keyword-stuffed anchors |

Is local SEO faster than national SEO?
Yes, local SEO is usually faster, because you compete with nearby businesses and much of the work is your Google profile and reviews, which Google picks up quickly. A café in Pakuranga competes with nearby cafés, not every café in New Zealand.
National SEO takes longer. You’re competing with bigger sites across the country, so you need more pages, more content and more links. Think 6 to 12 months before judging it.
If you need calls this month, SEO alone won’t do it. Google Ads can fill the gap while SEO builds. See what Google Ads costs in NZ.
What to expect month by month
A typical local SEO timeline is foundations in month 1, map-pack movement in months 1 to 2, organic movement in months 3 to 6, and a full review at month 6. Every business is different, so treat this as a common pattern, not a promise.
- A typical local SEO timeline
- 1
Fix the foundationsMonth 1
Google profile category and services, page titles, technical fixes, Search Console set up. Judge this month on work done, not rankings.
- 2
Map pack starts movingMonths 1 to 2
Profile changes and new reviews start to show. Calls from Google Maps often come first.
- 3
Organic movementMonths 3 to 6
Service and area pages start ranking for local searches. More pages and steady reviews keep it going.
- 4
ReviewMonth 6
Look at calls, forms and Google profile actions. Keep what works and change what doesn’t.
The 80/20 of local SEO
For a small local business, the few tasks that bring most SEO results are the right Google category, every service listed, a page per service, steady reviews, Search Console, a fast site and consistent contact details. That’s the 80/20 rule: a few tasks bring most of the results.
The tasks that matter most
- The right primary category on your Google Business Profile.
- Every service listed on your profile and your website.
- A page for each main service, naming the areas you cover.
- A steady flow of reviews, each with a personal reply.
- Your site connected to Google Search Console.
- A fast site that works well on phones.
- The same name, phone and address everywhere you’re listed.
