What is SEO? A plain-English guide

Written by the person who builds every Web Smart HQ site · AboutPublished 4 October 2026Updated 4 October 2026

Short answer

SEO (search engine optimisation) is the work that helps your business show up in Google’s free results and on Google Maps. It has 4 parts: technical setup, page content, your Google Business Profile, and reputation. For local NZ businesses, map-pack results typically move in 1 to 2 months and normal results in 3 to 6+ months.

  • SEO stands for search engine optimisation. It’s about the free results, not the paid ads.
  • In our experience, a local business’s Google Business Profile matters as much as its website.
  • Google says nobody can guarantee a top ranking. Be wary of anyone who does.
  • You can do many of the basics yourself, for free.

What is SEO, in one minute?

SEO is the work of making your website and Google profile easy for Google to understand and worth showing, so you appear in the free results and on Google Maps. When someone searches “electrician Henderson”, Google picks the pages and businesses it thinks answer best. SEO is how you become one of them. Google’s own SEO Starter Guide covers the basics.

Picture a sparky in Henderson. Without SEO, Google sees a homepage that says “All electrical work”. With SEO, it sees a page for each service and a Google profile in the right category. It also sees 30 recent reviews from West Auckland customers. Guess which one gets the call.

What are the 4 parts of SEO?

The 4 parts of SEO are technical setup, on-page content, local (your Google Business Profile) and reputation. Most small businesses need all four, but not in equal amounts. A café lives on its Google profile. An accountant needs strong service pages. A tradie needs both.

What each part covers
PartWhat it coversExample task
TechnicalCan Google find, load and read your site?Sitemap, fast mobile pages, no accidental blocks
On-pageDo your pages match what people search for?One page per service, clear titles and headings
LocalYour Google Business Profile and the map packRight primary category, services, photos, hours
ReputationDo other people vouch for you?Steady reviews, mentions and links from real NZ sites

How does Google decide who shows up?

For local results, Google says it looks at three things: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well you match the search. Distance is how close you are to the searcher. Prominence is how well known you are, including reviews and links. Google explains this in its local ranking tips.

Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey asks local SEO experts what matters most. For the map pack, the primary Google category came first. For normal local results, dedicated service pages came first.

Google also says its AI features run on the same core ranking systems. In our experience, good SEO still helps you appear in AI answers. See Is SEO still worth it in 2026?

SEO vs Google Ads

SEO earns the free results, while Google Ads buys the “Sponsored” spots at the top and charges you for each click. Ads start fast and stop when you stop paying. SEO is slower to build but keeps working.

What a click costs if you pay for it (Auckland, Oct 2026)
SearchSearches a monthCost per click (ex GST)
plumber auckland2,900~$12.52
electrician auckland1,000~$8.10
builder auckland1,000~$6.90
roofer auckland880~$24.99
accountant auckland590~$16.86

SEO you can do yourself

You can do most basic SEO yourself, for free: claim your Google profile, give each service its own page, set up Search Console and ask for reviews. You don’t need special tools to start.

The basics list

  • Claim and verify your Google Business Profile. Pick the primary category with care.
  • Fill in every service, your hours and your service areas in the profile.
  • Give each main service its own page on your website.
  • Put the service and place in each page title, e.g. “Heat Pump Installation Glen Eden”.
  • Set up Google Search Console and submit your sitemap.
  • Ask every customer for a review, and reply to each one.
  • Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere online.

What should an SEO consultant actually do?

A good SEO consultant fixes technical problems, improves your pages, sorts your Google profile and helps you earn reviews and real local mentions. They should report in plain English on calls, enquiries and visibility, not just rankings. Google’s guide on hiring an SEO is worth reading first.

Local SEO in NZ usually runs $500 to $1,500 a month (market range, ex GST, 2026). Our SEO cost guide breaks that down.

Red flags

A guaranteed top ranking. Bulk link packages. Long lock-in contracts. Reports full of numbers but no calls or enquiries. Anyone asking you to put keywords in your business name. Each one can cost you money, or get your Google profile suspended.

What is SEO, in plain English?

SEO is the work that helps your business show up in Google’s free results and on Google Maps. It means making your website and Google profile easy for Google to understand and worth showing. Take a Henderson sparky with a page for each service, the right Google category and steady reviews. In our experience, they’re far more likely to appear for “electrician Henderson” than a rival with one vague homepage.

What does SEO stand for?

SEO stands for search engine optimisation. In New Zealand it’s spelled with an “s”, the same as in the UK. In the US you’ll see “optimization”. It means the same thing either way. It covers the free, unpaid results on Google, Bing and other search engines. These days it also affects how AI tools describe your business.

Is SEO the same as Google Ads?

No. SEO earns the free results. Google Ads buys the “Sponsored” spots, and you pay for each click. In Auckland, a click for “plumber auckland” costs about $12.52 (ex GST, Oct 2026). Ads start working fast but stop when the money stops. SEO takes longer to build, typically 1 to 2 months for the map pack, but keeps working without a cost per click.

What does an SEO agency or consultant actually do?

They fix technical problems and improve your pages so they match real searches. They tidy your Google Business Profile and help you earn reviews and local mentions. They should report on calls and enquiries, not just rankings. To judge one, ask what they’ll do each month, who owns the work, and whether there’s a lock-in. Walk away from ranking guarantees.

Can I do SEO myself?

Yes, the basics. Verify your Google Business Profile and choose the right primary category. Fill in services, hours and photos. Give each main service its own web page with a clear title. Set up Google Search Console. Ask every customer for a review. That covers most of what a small local business needs. Competitive searches and technical problems are where paid help earns its keep.
