How we work with Dunedin businesses

Dunedin businesses work with us by email and video call. You send your logo, photos and details when it suits you; we send your homepage for you to check, and you see it before you pay the balance. We’re an Auckland business, and we keep the whole process online.

Dunedin is a university city with a long history. The University of Otago, founded in 1869, is New Zealand’s oldest university, and in the 2023 Census 26.7% of Dunedin residents were aged 15 to 29, against 19.4% nationally. Health care and education were the city’s two biggest industries by jobs.

At the same time, 17.3% of residents were 65 or older, and the median household income ($80,500) was below the national figure ($97,000). So the city has two big audiences, students and older locals, and both want clear prices and an easy way to get in touch.

What Dunedin types into Google

Monthly Google searches for everyday local businesses, by place name. A few are bigger than you might think, and a few barely register.

What it means for you

Dunedin uses the city name a lot. “plumber dunedin” and “builder dunedin” each get about 720 searches a month, and “builder dunedin” isn’t far off “builder auckland” (1,000) for a city about a thirteenth the size. Name Dunedin, and the suburbs you cover, from Mosgiel to the harbour.

A look at the Top 3 on Google Maps in Dunedin

For three everyday searches, we looked at the Top 3 businesses on Google’s map. What stood out, and what was missing.

  • cafe dunedin
  • electrician dunedin
  • hairdresser dunedin
Checked 8 October 2026
  • 46reviews: the fewest any Top 3 business had (a café)
  • 123reviews: the middle count across the 9 Top 3 businesses
  • 9 of 9had a website link on their profile
  • 1 of 9showed no street address (a service-area profile)

Searched on Google NZ (desktop) on 8 October 2026, set to Dunedin. We took the first three unpaid map results for each search and left the names out on purpose. Review counts are from the search itself; photos and claimed status come from Google listing data updated in 2026. Rankings shift daily, so read this as a snapshot.

What it means for you

Dunedin’s Top 3 had a higher floor than most places we checked: nobody got in with fewer than 46 reviews, and all 9 had a website. The businesses ahead of you have done the basics, so steady reviews and a clearly better site are what move you up.

Your Google profile checklist for Dunedin

What the Top 3 here did well, and the gaps we saw in the businesses ranked under them.

  • A website of your own, linked from Google. Every Top 3 business here had one, so it’s the baseline.
  • At least 10 real photos: your work, your team and your front door.
  • Ask every customer for a review, and reply to each one. The Top 3 here had a middle count of 123; the smallest had 46.
  • Correct opening hours, holidays too. It’s often the last thing people look at before they come.
  • The correct primary category, and only extras that really apply. It’s one of the signals we see matter again and again.
  • A service area if you go to customers, so your home address stays private. 1 of 9 Top 3 businesses here worked this way.
  • Matching name, address and phone number everywhere: site, profile and directories.

What’s different about doing business in Dunedin

Students, heritage streets and cruise ships all shape how Dunedin customers find a business.

  • 01

    A student city

More than a quarter of residents are 15 to 29, and many of them are students who book, compare and review on their phones. Mobile-friendly booking, student pricing if you offer it, and recent reviews with replies all help.

  • 02

Older customers who want it simple

Around one in six residents is 65 or older. Readable text, a phone number they can tap, and plain directions with parking information make a real difference.

  • 03

    A heritage city centre

Dunedin is known for its Victorian and Edwardian buildings, including the 1906 railway station. Doors in older buildings can be harder to spot from the street, so an accurate map pin, a photo of your entrance and simple directions save customers a frustrating walk.

  • 04

    Cruise season at Port Chalmers

The 2025/26 cruise season ran from late October 2025 to mid-April 2026, with ships calling at Port Chalmers and the Dunedin wharves. Shops, tours and cafés can catch passengers looking for things to do, if their Google profile shows the right hours on ship days.

What it means for you

Dunedin is a large, slow-growing market (128,901 people, up 2.1% since 2018) with median household income ($80,500) below the national figure, so clear upfront pricing helps visitors decide. With over 13,000 business locations, ranking for your suburb as well as ‘Dunedin’ matters.

Dunedin and the suburbs we cover

We work with businesses across Dunedin City. A quick guide to the main areas and what counts in each.

Central Dunedin and the Octagon

The Octagon and George Street, the city’s retail and hospitality core. Current hours and photos on Google matter here, because people check before they head into town.

North Dunedin

Around the University of Otago campus. Food, retail and services here depend on students, so term-time hours and mobile booking count.

South Dunedin

Suburbs south of the city centre. Local services here can name South Dunedin alongside Dunedin.

St Clair

The beach suburb at the southern edge of the city. Hospitality here should keep weekend and holiday hours up to date on Google.

Mosgiel

A town west of the city on the Taieri Plains, within Dunedin City. Businesses here should lead with “Mosgiel” and add Dunedin if they serve it.

Port Chalmers

The harbour town where cruise ships berth. Retail and hospitality here should match their Google hours to ship days in season.

Portobello and the Peninsula

A village on the Otago Peninsula. Tourism and hospitality businesses here need clear directions, opening days and booking links.

Dunedin through the year

Events and seasons that bring a change in searches, with a note on when to prepare your profile.

  • Mid FebruaryO-Week, University of Otago↗Thousands of students arrive in North Dunedin for orientation week (2026: 16 to 22 February), with a packed programme of events before lectures start.Tip:Student-facing businesses: update Google hours and post a welcome offer the week before students arrive, then ask new customers for reviews while the rush is on.
  • MarchDunedin Fringe Festival↗An annual 11-day multidisciplinary arts festival across city venues (2027: 4 to 14 March).Tip:Bars and cafés near Fringe venues: post pre-show specials on Google and keep evening hours accurate for the festival fortnight.
  • March (every second year)iD Dunedin Fashion Week↗Now held every two years, with the iD Show at the Dunedin Railway Station as the centrepiece (next: 15 to 21 March 2027).Tip:Accommodation and hospitality: add iD week to your Google posts early, as out-of-town visitors book well ahead.

Other places Dunedin finds local businesses

Google is the big one, but it isn’t the only place locals find a business. These are real, local, and worth a few minutes each.

  • Business South↗

The Otago Southland chamber of commerce and employers’ association, with BA5 networking, Beer and Yarn evenings, a member directory and app, training and an advice line.

Tip:Use BA5 evenings and the member directory to meet other Dunedin owners who can refer work.

  • Enterprise Dunedin business clinics↗

Dunedin City Council’s economic development team runs free, confidential half-hour business clinics with an advisor.

Tip:Book a free clinic to find out which support or funding suits your stage.

  • Startup Dunedin↗

Tip:New founders can book a free kōrero, then list the business on Google before launch day.

  • Otago Farmers Market↗

One of the country’s oldest farmers markets, every Saturday 8am to 12.30pm in the Dunedin Railway Station northern carpark, for Otago producers.

Tip:Producers with a stall should put the market day and location on their Google profile and website.

What advertisers pay per click in Dunedin

What it costs advertisers to appear at the top of Google for these searches, and a rough cost per enquiry.

hairdresser dunedin1,90023c to $1.46about $8.45
cafe dunedin4,4001c to 95cabout $4.80

Costs are ex GST. *If 1 in 10 clicks turns into a call or enquiry, at the middle of the range. Your rate may be better or worse. Cost per click is Google’s top-of-page bid estimate for New Zealand (low to high), checked 8 October 2026.

Should you run ads?

For builders, electricians, mechanics and plumbers, a click here costs about $1.01 to $5.20 (ex GST). For jobs worth a few hundred dollars or more, ads can earn their keep, as long as they’re limited to searches that signal real work. For hairdressers and cafés the clicks are cheap, but people tend to pick from the map and reviews, so put your effort there first. We can set up and run Google Ads for you, or read what Google Ads costs in NZ first.

Dunedin questions

Straight answers. Can’t see yours? Ask us.

Can we meet in person in Dunedin?

We work by email and video call. You send your logo, photos and details when it suits you, and we go through your homepage together on screen. We’re based in Auckland, where we can meet in person; for Dunedin businesses, everything happens online. Expect a reply within 2 business days.

Most of my customers are students. What should my website do?

Work well on a phone, load quickly and make booking or enquiring easy. Show prices if you can, and keep your Google profile hours right for term time and the holidays. Reviews matter a lot to students, so ask every customer and reply to every review.

My business is in an old building. Does that cause problems on Google Maps?

Not usually, but check your pin. If your entrance is down a lane or on a side street, move the pin to the door and add a photo of the entrance. It saves people walking round the block, and it’s part of the Google profile setup we do with every site.

Is a website still worth it if I’m already on Google Maps?

Usually, yes. Your profile helps people find you, and your website is where they check you out before calling. It’s also what Google and AI tools read to learn what you do. When we checked Dunedin on 8 October 2026, all 9 Top 3 businesses had a website, so a site is the baseline here, not the edge.

Do I need lots of reviews to show up in Dunedin?

There’s no magic number, and how close you are to the person searching counts for a lot. As a guide, in our 8 October 2026 check, the Top 3 businesses in Dunedin had a middle count of 123 reviews, and the smallest had just 46. From what we see, how recent your reviews are, and whether you reply, matters as much as the number.

What should a small business website cost in NZ?

Anywhere from a few hundred dollars to many thousands, depending on how many pages, what it needs to do and who builds it. Our prices are fixed: Business Lite (one page) is $499 + GST and Business Plus (five pages) is $899 + GST, both with your domain, hosting and Google profile setup for the first year. A deposit books your spot. You see your homepage before you pay the balance. See what’s included.
