Local, and happy to meet
We’re an Auckland business, so we can meet in person anywhere in Auckland, North Shore included: at your office, shop or a café nearby. If email and video call suit you better, that works too, at the same fixed price. Either way, you see your homepage before you pay the balance.
North Shore customers have money and options. In the 2023 Census, the median household income was $126,900 in Upper Harbour and $126,400 in Devonport-Takapuna, against $97,000 nationally. Professional, scientific and technical services were the biggest industry by jobs in Devonport-Takapuna, Upper Harbour, Kaipātiki and Hibiscus and Bays.
It’s also one of Auckland’s most international areas. In Upper Harbour, which includes Albany, 53.3% of residents were born overseas and 45.5% identified as Asian, and Northern Chinese (Mandarin) was the most common single language after English.
What the North Shore types into Google
Average searches a month for common businesses, place name included. Some of these numbers surprise people. Others are tiny.

Google Ads keyword data for New Zealand: average monthly searches, September 2025 to August 2026, checked 8 October 2026. Google rounds these estimates.
What it means for you
Shoppers search by suburb: “cafe takapuna” gets about 3,600 searches a month and “cafe albany” 2,400, against 1,000 for “cafe north shore”. Trades flip it: people search “plumber north shore” (480). So a Takapuna café names Takapuna; a North Shore plumber names the Shore and lists every suburb it covers.

We searched the North Shore. Here’s what Google showed.
Three everyday searches and the Top 3 businesses in Google’s map for each. What they had, and what they were missing.
- cafe takapuna
- electrician north shore
- hairdresser albany
- 13reviews: the fewest any Top 3 business had (an electrician)
- 2 of 9had fewer than 20 reviews
- 2 of 9had no website on their own domain: 1 linked to a booking site, and 1 to a free website-builder address
- 210reviews: the middle count across the 9 Top 3 businesses
Searched on Google NZ (desktop) on 8 October 2026, set to Takapuna, the North Shore and Albany. We looked at the top three unpaid map results for each search and haven’t named the businesses. Review counts are from the search itself; photos and claimed status come from Google listing data updated in 2026. Google’s results move every day; this is one moment in time.
What it means for you
The North Shore mixes heavily reviewed cafés with newcomers: two Top 3 businesses had fewer than 20 reviews, and an electrician made it with 13. A proper site and a complete profile count for a lot here.
A Google profile checklist for the North Shore
Drawn from our local check: what the Top 3 had, and what the next businesses down were missing.
- Your own website, linked from your profile. 2 of 9 Top 3 businesses here linked to nothing, a social page or a free builder address instead.
- 10 or more real photos: your work, your people and your entrance.
- A steady flow of reviews from every customer, each with a reply. The Top 3 here had a middle count of 210; the smallest had 13.
- Up-to-date hours, with holiday hours set. People look before they leave home.
- The right main category, plus a few accurate extra ones. In our experience, Google leans on it to decide which searches you show up for.
- A service area if you travel to customers, which keeps your home address off the map.
- One consistent name, address and phone across your website, Google profile and listings.
What a good Google profile does for you
Found on the map, picked, booked and reviewed: the whole journey in 30 seconds, with example businesses.
What’s different about doing business on the North Shore
Two big centres, customers who compare, and a lot of languages. Here’s what that means online.
- 01
Two metropolitan centres
Takapuna and Albany are both metropolitan centres in the Auckland Unitary Plan, each a destination in its own right. Businesses in either should name their centre clearly, along with the nearby suburbs they serve.
- 02
Customers who compare
With household incomes well above the national median, customers can afford to choose, and they shop around. Recent reviews with replies, real photos of your work and clear prices or starting prices help you make the shortlist.
- 03
Asian and South African communities
Asian residents made up 45.5% of Upper Harbour and 34.8% of Kaipātiki in 2023, and Afrikaans was spoken by 4.2% in Hibiscus and Bays. If your team speaks Mandarin, Cantonese, Korean or Afrikaans, say so on your site and Google profile.
- 04
Beaches and summer weekends
Takapuna Beach and the town centre beside it draw crowds in summer, especially on weekends and holidays. Cafés and shops near the beaches should set holiday hours on Google ahead of time and keep photos current.
The North Shore by the numbers
From the 2023 Census. Worth a look before you decide what your site says and how it says it.
| Measure | Here | All of New Zealand |
|---|---|---|
| People, 2023 Census | 337,125 (+7.7% since 2018) | |
| Born overseas | 46.3% | NZ 28.8% |
| Most common languages after English | Mandarin 6.9%, Chinese (other) 4.1%, Afrikaans 2.4% | |
| Work from home | 22.0% | NZ 17.7% |
| Business locations, February 2025 | 50,226 |
Stats NZ 2023 Census place summaries: the Devonport-Takapuna, Kaipātiki, Upper Harbour and Hibiscus and Bays local board areas, added together (source 1, source 2, source 3, source 4). Business locations: Stats NZ business demography, February 2025.
What it means for you
Nearly half of North Shore residents (46%) were born overseas and Mandarin is the top language after English, so plain-English pages help, and key information in Chinese may be worth adding if that is your customer base. More than 1 in 5 working residents work from home and every board’s median household income is above $119,000, well above the national $97,000.
North Shore suburbs we cover
We work with businesses right across the North Shore, and we can meet you at any of these. Here’s what tends to matter in each.
Takapuna
A metropolitan centre between Lake Pupuke and the beach. Hospitality, retail and professional firms here compete hard, so a complete Google profile and good photos are the minimum.
Albany
The North Shore’s other metropolitan centre, in Upper Harbour. Businesses here serve a fast-growing, international population, so plain English and the languages you speak both help.
Devonport
A village at the southern tip of the peninsula, below Takarunga / Mount Victoria. Shops and cafés here serve locals and day visitors, so hours and photos on Google need to be current.
Milford
The beach suburb north of Takapuna, beside Lake Pupuke. Local services here can name Milford alongside Takapuna.
Browns Bay
A beachside town centre in Hibiscus and Bays. Local retailers and services here should name Browns Bay and the East Coast Bays suburbs they serve.
Glenfield
In Kaipātiki, where 34.8% of residents identified as Asian in 2023. Trades and services here often cover the whole Shore, which a service-area profile handles well.
Birkenhead
A harbourside suburb in Kaipātiki with its own village shopping area. Local shops here need hours and photos that match the door.

|---|---|---|---|
| electrician north shore | 320 | $4.26 to $13.52 | about $88.90 |

| hairdresser takapuna | 720 | 38c to $1.23 | about $8.05 |
| cafe takapuna | 3,600 | 1c to 21c | about $1.10 |
Costs are ex GST. *If 1 in 10 clicks turns into a call or enquiry, at the middle of the range. Your rate may be better or worse. Cost per click is Google’s top-of-page bid estimate for New Zealand (low to high), checked 8 October 2026.
Should you run ads?
For electricians, plumbers, builders and mechanics, a click here costs about $1.42 to $13.52 (ex GST). If each job brings in a few hundred dollars or more, ads can be worth it, as long as they only show for searches that mean business. Hairdressers and cafés pay far less per click, but customers usually pick those from the map and reviews, so start there. North Shore questions
Straight answers. Can’t see yours? Ask us.
Can you meet me in person on the North Shore?
Yes. We’re an Auckland business and can meet you in person anywhere in Auckland, North Shore included, or work by email and video call if that’s easier. The price is fixed first: $499 + GST for one page or $899 + GST for five. We reply within 2 business days.
Should my site say North Shore, Takapuna or Albany?
For trades, use the wider name as well as your suburbs: “plumber north shore” gets about 480 Google searches a month and “electrician north shore” about 320. Shops and cafés do better leading with their own centre. We set your Google profile and pages up to match, without promising rankings.
Should my website be in Chinese as well as English?
Not necessarily. Start with clear English, then say which languages your team speaks on your site and Google profile. If a large share of your customers prefer Chinese or Korean, a short translated section can help. Tell us before we quote and we’ll give you a fixed price.
Do I need a website if I’m on Google Maps?
In most cases, yes. The profile gets you noticed. The website is where people decide whether to call, and it’s what Google and AI tools read to understand your business. Our 8 October 2026 check of the North Shore found that 2 of the 9 Top 3 businesses had no website on their own domain. An easy one to fix.
How many Google reviews do I need to show up on the North Shore?
There isn’t a set number, and distance from the searcher plays a big part. To give you an idea: in our 8 October 2026 check, the Top 3 businesses on the North Shore had a middle count of 210 reviews, and the smallest had just 13. In our experience, a steady trickle of new reviews, each answered, counts as much as the total.
How much does a website cost in New Zealand?
It ranges from a few hundred dollars to many thousands, depending on the number of pages, what the site needs to do and who builds it. We keep it simple: Business Lite (one page) is $499 + GST and Business Plus (five pages) is $899 + GST, both with your domain, hosting and Google profile setup for the first year. A deposit books your spot. You see your homepage before you pay the balance. See what’s included.
