A Tauranga website, made simple
Tauranga businesses work with us by email and video call. You send your logo, photos and details when it suits you; we send your homepage for you to check, and you see it before you pay the balance. We’re an Auckland business, and we keep the whole process online.
Tauranga keeps growing. Its census population went from 137,130 in 2018 to 152,844 in 2023, about 11% more people, and Stats NZ counted 20,364 businesses in the city in February 2025. People who have just moved here don’t have a go-to plumber, hairdresser or café yet, so they search, and they compare what they find.
The city also has distinct pockets: the port and the Mount, the city centre, the coastal suburbs at Pāpāmoa, and Western Bay towns like Te Puke and Ōmokoroa. A good site names the areas you actually serve, with a Google profile set up to match.

What it means for you
Tauranga searches like a big city: “plumber tauranga” gets about 720 searches a month, a quarter of “plumber auckland” for a city about a tenth the size. And the Mount is a market of its own: “cafe mount maunganui” gets 1,600 a month, two thirds of “cafe tauranga”. If you’re at the Mount or in Pāpāmoa, say so.

We searched Tauranga. Here’s what Google showed.
Three everyday searches and the Top 3 businesses in Google’s map for each. What they had, and what they were missing.
- cafe tauranga
- electrician tauranga
- hairdresser tauranga
- 173reviews: the middle count across the 9 Top 3 businesses
- 21reviews: the fewest any Top 3 business had (a café)
- 1 of 9linked to a Facebook or Instagram page instead of its own website
- 1 of 9had fewer than 10 photos on its profile
- 9 of 9profiles were claimed by the owner
Searched on Google NZ (desktop) on 8 October 2026, set to Tauranga. We looked at the top three unpaid map results for each search and haven’t named the businesses. Review counts are from the search itself; photos and claimed status come from Google listing data updated in 2026. Google’s results move every day; this is one moment in time.
What it means for you
Tauranga’s Top 3s are well looked after: every profile claimed, and a middle count of 173 reviews. A café still made it with 21, so it isn’t only about volume. A complete profile, real photos and a site that names your suburb give a smaller business its best shot.
A Google profile checklist for Tauranga
Drawn from our local check: what the Top 3 had, and what the next businesses down were missing.
- Your own website, linked from your profile. 1 of 9 Top 3 businesses here linked to nothing, a social page or a free builder address instead.
- 10 or more real photos: your work, your people and your entrance. 1 of 9 here had fewer.
- A steady flow of reviews from every customer, each with a reply. The Top 3 here had a middle count of 173; the smallest had 21.
- Up-to-date hours, with holiday hours set. People look before they leave home.
- The right main category, plus a few accurate extra ones. In our experience, Google leans on it to decide which searches you show up for.
- A service area if you travel to customers, which keeps your home address off the map.
- One consistent name, address and phone across your website, Google profile and listings.

What makes Tauranga different online
Growth, a working port, an older population and a beach town that changes with the seasons. Here’s what that means online.
- 01
Newcomers searching from scratch
About 11% population growth between the 2018 and 2023 censuses means a steady stream of people with no local habits yet. A complete Google profile, recent reviews and a site that answers “what, where, how much” is how they choose.
- 02
Port of Tauranga and the supply chain
Port of Tauranga is New Zealand’s largest port by volume. Freight, logistics, engineering and marine firms that sell to other businesses need clear capability pages, certifications and a quote form, more than a shopfront.
- 03
An older customer base
In the 2023 Census, 19.7% of Tauranga residents were 65 or older, against 16.6% nationally. Readable text, plain prices and a phone number that’s easy to tap matter on every site, and more so here.
- 04
The Mount's summer peak
Cruise ships are part of summer at Mount Maunganui: Tourism Bay of Plenty expected about 112 ships and 290,000 passengers and crew in the 2023/24 season. Cafés and shops near the Mount should set summer hours, menus and photos on Google before the season starts.
Tauranga by the numbers
From the 2023 Census. Worth a look before you decide what your site says and how it says it.

What it means for you
Tauranga grew 11.5% between 2018 and 2023 to nearly 153,000 people and about 1 in 5 residents are 65 or over, so a clear, easy-to-read site that newcomers can find by suburb works well. With over 20,000 business locations, naming the suburbs you serve helps you stand out.
Tauranga and the Western Bay we cover
We work with businesses across Tauranga City and the Western Bay of Plenty. Here are the main areas, and what tends to matter in each.
Tauranga city centre
The CBD and The Strand waterfront. Offices, hospitality and retail here compete with suburban centres, so being easy to find on Google Maps matters.
Mount Maunganui
The beach town and port suburb at the foot of Mauao. “cafe mount maunganui” gets about 1,600 searches a month, so hospitality here should lead with “Mount Maunganui”, not just “Tauranga”.
Pāpāmoa
The coastal suburbs east of the Mount, along Pāpāmoa Beach. If you’re a trade or home service based here and work across the city, a service-area profile lets you show up without listing your home address.
Bethlehem
On the western side of the city. Local services here draw mostly on nearby suburbs, so naming Bethlehem and its neighbours on your site helps.
Greerton
A village shopping area south of the city centre. Shops here rely on locals, so hours and photos on Google count.
Te Puke
In the Western Bay of Plenty District, and known as the kiwifruit capital of the world. Orchard services and contractors here need plain service pages and the areas they cover.
Ōmokoroa
A peninsula settlement north-west of the city, in the Western Bay of Plenty District. Local trades here can name Ōmokoroa and the nearby Tauranga suburbs they reach.
Tauranga through the year
Local events and seasons that change what people search for, and when to get your Google profile ready for them.

Should you run ads?
For plumbers, electricians and builders, a click here costs about $2.28 to $9.44 (ex GST). If each job brings in a few hundred dollars or more, ads can be worth it, as long as they only show for searches that mean business. Hairdressers and cafés pay far less per click, but customers usually pick those from the map and reviews, so start there. Tauranga questions
Straight answers. Can’t see yours? Ask us.
Will we ever meet in person?
Usually not in person, but you’ll still get plenty of time with us. We work with Tauranga businesses by email and video call: you send your logo, photos and details when it suits you, and we talk you through your homepage on a call. Our base is in Auckland. We reply within 2 business days.
My business at the Mount is quiet in winter. Is a website still worth it?
Usually, yes. Summer visitors find you on Google Maps, and locals keep you going through winter. Your site and profile should serve both: seasonal hours set ahead of time, and a clear page for what you offer all year. Updating hours on your Google profile takes a few minutes.
Should my site say Tauranga, Mount Maunganui or Pāpāmoa?
Name the places you genuinely serve. Some searches use the suburb: “cafe mount maunganui” gets about 1,600 searches a month, close to the 2,400 for “cafe tauranga”. Trades are mostly searched by city name, like “plumber tauranga” at about 720 a month. We set up your profile and pages to match how your customers search, without promising rankings.
Do I need a website if I’m on Google Maps?
In most cases, yes. The profile gets you noticed. The website is where people decide whether to call, and it’s what Google and AI tools read to understand your business. Our 8 October 2026 check of Tauranga found that 1 of the 9 Top 3 businesses had no website on their own domain. An easy one to fix.
How many Google reviews do I need to show up in Tauranga?
There isn’t a set number, and distance from the searcher plays a big part. To give you an idea: in our 8 October 2026 check, the Top 3 businesses in Tauranga had a middle count of 173 reviews, and the smallest had just 21. In our experience, a steady trickle of new reviews, each answered, counts as much as the total.
How much does a website cost in New Zealand?
It ranges from a few hundred dollars to many thousands, depending on the number of pages, what the site needs to do and who builds it. We keep it simple: Business Lite (one page) is $499 + GST and Business Plus (five pages) is $899 + GST, both with your domain, hosting and Google profile setup for the first year. A deposit books your spot. You see your homepage before you pay the balance. See what’s included.
